Black women creators on YouTube are underrepresented and underrated. Although the platform has made great strides towards diversity since its inception in 2005, their challenge with diversity remains. According to Think With Google, black millennials spend more time on YouTube than their counterparts however black content creators, especially women, are less successful than their counterparts. For instance, the YouTube beauty gurus, the most popular beauty guru at the moment is Yuya. She has 24 million-plus subscribers to her channel. Following her is James Charles with 18.6 Million subscribers. There is not one black woman the top 15 beauty gurus on YouTube. The most popular black beauty guru is Jackie Aina who has a total of 3.39 million subscribers. A very low amount compared to her counterparts. While many black women have found some form of success in the beauty and blogging world, black YouTube commentary channels are not receiving the same level of “success”.
Being a woman is hard, to be a black woman is harder. Below is a list of amazing black commentary channels on YouTube who deserve more recognition. Discovered most of these channels during freshmen year in university and they’ve played a huge role in shaping me to be the person I am today.
