So You Want To Write A Book - Episode Four

A STEP-BY-STEP GUIDE TO PUBLISHING ON AMAZON KDP

Ok, so we’ve talked about publishing and print-on-demand companies (PODs). Today we’re talking about publishing on Amazon. Are you new here? Hi! I'm Cachline and I am your guide to crafting stories and navigating the publishing word.

As mentioned in my last blog, Amazon is an excellent POD company for self-published authors. Here is a Step-by-Step Guide to Publishing on Amazon KDP.

Step 1: Create an Amazon KDP Account (This is important as you can not publish on Amazon without doing so).

1.        Sign Up: Go to the Amazon KDP website and sign in with your Amazon account. If you don’t have one, you’ll need to create it.

2.     Complete Your Profile: Fill in your author/publisher information, including payment and tax details.

Step 2: Create a Payoneer Account (Caribbean people without U.S banking account)

Collecting Amazon KDP Royalties with Payoneer in the Caribbean

If you’re an author living in the Caribbean and publishing your books on Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP), you might face challenges in receiving your royalties. Amazon’s direct deposit system does not support many Caribbean countries, making it difficult to get paid. However, using Payoneer can simplify this process. Here’s how you can use Payoneer to collect your Amazon KDP royalties:

Why Use Payoneer?

Payoneer is a global payment service that allows you to receive payments from international companies, including Amazon. It provides you with a virtual bank account in various currencies, which you can use to receive your KDP royalties. This is particularly useful if Amazon does not support your local bank.

Steps to Set Up Payoneer for Amazon KDP

  1. Sign Up for Payoneer:

    • Visit the Payoneer website and sign up for an account. You’ll need to provide personal information and verify your identity.

  2. Link Payoneer to Your Amazon KDP Account:

    • Once your Payoneer account is set up, log in to your Amazon KDP account.

    • Go to the “Account” section and select “Payment Settings.”

    • Choose “Add a new bank account” and enter the bank details provided by Payoneer. These details can be found in your Payoneer account under “Receiving Accounts.”

  3. Withdraw Funds to Your Local Bank:

    • Once you receive your royalties in your Payoneer account, you can withdraw the funds to your local bank account or use the Payoneer Mastercard to access your money directly from ATMs.

Step 3: Add a New Kindle eBook

  1. Start a New Project: On your KDP dashboard, click on “Create a New Title” and select “Kindle eBook.”

  2. Enter Book Details: Fill in the book title, subtitle, author name, and other relevant details. Make sure your book description is interesting and includes keywords for better discoverability.

Step 4: Upload Your Manuscript

  1. Upload File: Upload your formatted manuscript file.

  2. Preview: Use the KDP previewer to check how your book will look on different devices. Make any necessary adjustments.

Step 5: Create Your eBook Cover

  1. Design a Cover: You can use Amazon’s Cover Creator tool or upload your own professionally designed cover. The cover should be in JPEG or TIFF format.

  2. Preview: Ensure the cover looks good in thumbnail size as well as full size.

Step 6: Set eBook Pricing

  1. Select Territories: Choose the territories where you want your book to be available.

  2. Set Price: Decide on the pricing for your eBook. Amazon offers two royalty plans: 35% and 70%. The 70% royalty option has specific requirements, including pricing between $2.99 and $9.99.

Step 7: Enroll in KDP Select (Optional)

  1. KDP Select: Enrolling in KDP Select gives you access to promotional tools like Kindle Unlimited and Kindle Countdown Deals. However, it requires exclusivity to Amazon for 90 days.

Step 8: Publish Your eBook

  1. Review: Double-check all the details and make sure everything is correct.

  2. Publish: Click the “Publish Your Kindle eBook” button. Amazon will review your book and it should be live within 72 hours.

  3. Monitor Sales: Keep track of your sales and reviews through the KDP dashboard.

And that is it. Your step-by-step method to KDP publishing. I hope this was helpful. Next week we’re talking about using Upwork and Fiverr to make your self publishing life significantly easier. Have a great day!
