Despite some of the most popular genres of music originating from Black Culture, black artist especially women are not protected and exempt from racism in the music industry. The music industry is known for using and abusing young women and replacing them, black women get the additional burden of being discriminated against and fetishized. Studies have shown that black women often have to work twice as hard than their counterparts to receive the same level of respect.
Due to the underlying issues within the music industry, there is often prejudiced criteria set in place for black women artist. Labels search for a particular look or act that would appeal the masses while drowning out artists’ artistic freedom.
