We Won: Erykah’s & Jill’s Battle was everything and more!

Queen

I see you.

I see you working hard,

Doing the thing.

You’re unstoppable

And it’s fascinating to watch.

Everything you touch turns to gold.

It gives me joy to see,

The confidence,

In your walk. Your talk.

You move with such elegance

And nothing touches your intelligence.

I see you walking,

Everyday,

Everywhere,

Chin up,

Head high,

Shoulders straight;

With the confidence of only a Queen

May 9th 2020, neo-soul goddesses Erykah Badu and Jill Scott made history with their verzuz battle. The pair became the first female duo to participate in the event and became the most viewed act of the said event(…so far). The initial arrangement of the event was a hit for hit battle between the two icons. However, the pair used the event as space for love, affirmation, sisterhood, and allyship. Facebook user Felicia Addison described the affair as follows: It felt like your mama greasing your scalp, like your sister whispering something for only your ears and like your best friend giving you a look where words are not needed but a conversation took place. I don’t know about you, but I need an encore! Everything and More!” Internet users all over the world felt the love and respect the dynamic duo declared in the atmosphere. Perhaps one of the most notable instance of love and respect was Jill Scott continuing to play Tyrone by Erykah Badu after her (Erykah’s) signal dropped. This act showed the event was not that of a battle but one of appreciation.

As expected, the event live chat feed was filled with legends and stars feeling the vibe. One of those persons was former first lady Michelle Obama. Not only did she tag her husband, Former President of the United States of America Barack Obama, into the live, she also made a song request (Green Eyes by Erykah Badu). With over 700 Thousand views it is safe to say that that possible vibe was felt all over the world.

At a time when black women are constantly attacked and portrayed in a negative light, this verzuz battle was needed to cleanse the atmosphere. It was needed to remind black women that they are amazing. That they are beautiful and capable. That they too are magical. This battle was a small way of the universe telling us that everything gone be alright. And after tonight, I’m convinced we will be.
